Q.Can Lapin Cherry Trees Grow In The Calgary Area?
I’m looking for a Dark and Sweet Cherry Tree (a Lapin or something similar), that will grow and survive the weather conditions in the Calgary – Chestermere areas. The Lapin Cherry is my favourite and I have planted several Lapin Cherry Trees wherever I’ve lived. We moved from BC (Surrey area) to Chestermere,AB last August and I would like to plant a dark and sweet Bing Cherry Tree (like LAPINS) where I now live. I’m concerned since I believe our Growing Zone is 3 and I’m not sure if Lapins will grow in our Growing Zone. Look forward to hearing back from you in this regard. Thank you! Vern Walle

I don't think that this would be a suitable choice for the area. Unfortunately, you will need something specialized for a climate that cold.
My advice would be to look for any cultivar with the words "Canada" or "Canadian" in it. There are many on the market that are bred to withstand the cold in your area. Though the Lapins was developed in BC, it cannot withstand temperatures much colder than that.
One that I KNOW will do very well in your area will be one known as "Romeo". This little specimen is hardy down to zone 2!

This article will offer suggestions on some of the more cold tolerant cherries:
