These plants are normally cut back once they begin withering away towards end of growing season. Since they tend to bloom in spring, I would not recommend cutting any of the new growth, as this could interfere with its flowering. Once the plant has put on its spring-flowering show, however, you may trim back some of the growth if necessary.
