rooting aloe

Can I root an adult aloe plant that has been sawed off from its root system? This is an aloe plant that has some arms over 1.5 feet. It was growing too big for the pot it shared with several other, much smaller aloe plants, so my friend sawed this plant at its based. It has a couple of inches of stem that is a little over an inch in diameter. Could it survive? After a few days of air, should I try soil or water?

Though it can be done, it is not usually very successful. The Aloe Vera leaves have a lot of moisture and they usually end of dying before they root. The larger the leaf the more difficult.
