Can I prune now?

I planted a fig tree last year. It was a cutting from one of my father’s fig trees. It got some fruit on it last year, only a few figs though. It is growing from the bottom and the branches are bare. I’m not sure if I should cut those branches off or let it just do its thing and cut them in the winter. I have never had a fig tree; my parents always did. My father loved figs. He gave me this tree as I mentioned before. He passed this winter so this tree is very important to me. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you.
Bianca
