Actually, daffodils are a good choice for under trees. In the spring, when daffodils are blooming and storing energy, the tree's leaves have not filled in enough to overly shade the flowers. By the time the trees' leaves a filled in, the daffodils are dying back.
If you plant in pots, the only issue you will really have is making sure they get enough water. As their roots will be restricted by the pot, they cannot grow out to find more water and are more reliant on you to make sure they get water.
