Q.planting Raspberries and Blueberries close together

Zone 3 | lte79 added on June 10, 2014 | Answered

Can I plant 3 Boyne Raspberries and 1 each of Polaris & Northland Blueberries and 2 Haskaps close together? I have purchased these berries recently and was going to plant in the very back of my backyard; however, I was wondering if I plant them in the same area – providing I space them about 3 feet apart, will they be ok? Should I put raspberries in a plastic container before planting them in the ground? That way it will restrain the roots to spread too far and grow too far?

Please help~

There's a lot of talk on the web about the invasive habit of raspberries, but we had a black raspberry patch on our farm for 25 years, and it was never particularly invasive. I think the important part of control is correct pruning. As far as planting blueberries and raspberries together, blueberries need a very acid soil, and if you don't have that naturally, you may want to put the blueberries in containers in order to keep them acidified.
