Q.Can I Grow Zone 10b Plants In A Zone 9b Location?
chocolate drop coleus
It usually depends on the type of plant, how cold the winter actually turns out to be, if the plant is in the ground or in a container, etc. CDC is rated for Zone 10a. Assume coleus will behave as annuals in 9b with the possibility of no issues in very mild winters. Coleus should be brought inside before temperatures are expected to go below 60F. Treat the soil as needed to avoid bringing pests and diseases inside. Place the container about a foot away from a south facing glass door/window and provide some environmental humidity in the usually dry inside of most homes in the winter. Use grow lights if needed. Reduce the amount of water as the number of leaves is reduced. Bring them outside slowly after all danger of under 60F temperatures has passed (put them in bright shade for several days first, then slowly increase the number of hours of direct sun).
