Q.Can I Get Rid Of Bindweed?

Zone LA145WA | guitargirl95 added on July 20, 2024 | Answered

Hedge bindweed keeps coming back no matter how I try. I have tried weedol, pulling it up at the roots and cutting it to soil level but it’s very persistent and usually reappears within three days. I have planted some new plants in the same area and I don’t want them to be damaged. Is there any trick for getting rid of it? I think it is coming from next doors garden and they are unlikely to do anything about it.

This may get complicated. Your established plants may be the cost. Getting rid of the plant will definitely feel like something close to impossible. Persistent action is necessary to keep it at bay, though. You are going to want to try and kill everything in that area, first. This can mean boiling water treatments, uprooting by hand, or either chemical or other natural ways.

As you have experienced, pulling it by hand is quite tedious. With some persistence it can be managed to some degree. Boiling water can help kill everything in the area, but this will kill EVERYTHING, and needs to be consistent, as well.

The best thing would be to make a raised bed with no access to outside soil. This will ensure that no roots enter the bed. You can attempt to dig out and replant your plants, but you might find that some pieces of roots from the bindweed will probably contaminate the bed that way.
