Can I cut roots on my lime tree?

I have a lime tree that I have grown from seed. It is in a container. It is about 5 years old and I repot the tree every year to give it more room to grow. I bring in the tree in the winter time and put it outside in the spring/summer. I live in North Carolina. Is it possible to cut back the roots on my tree to put in a smaller pot? It is currently in a 20″ wide container and is getting too large to bring inside. Also, when and how should I prune the tree? Thanks in advance 😉
