Can ginger plant leaves cause skin irritation?

I was re-adjusting the drip hose around my ginger plant and it felt like I’d been bitten or stung on my finger, a couple of spots on my arms, and on my knee. My finger turned red and burned like a fire ant bite. This lasted about 4 or 5 hours. I didn’t see anything else, insect or otherwise, that would have caused this kind ofsevere reaction.

I never noticed anything like this before, and now I’m very curious. Was this caused by the ginger plant leaves, or did something else cause my reactions?

Thanks,
Jennifer
