Can a Lime Tree Produce Lemons?

We moved to Phoenix in August, thought we had a lime tree and used the limes from the tree. Now in December the fruit is larger and yellow, looks like lemons. Can this happen or did we just use the fruit before it was ripe?

Limes are normally picked unripe (green) but if left on the tree will ripen to yellow. This article explains more:
