Q.Can a gardenia survive a prune of deadwood after winter?

About 1/3 of my plant is alive and greening up but the other 2/3 are dead. Should I prune all the other dead wood off? It was over-wintered in an insulated box. I’m hoping stronger roots after two years in the ground will let more plant survive next year.
