Can A Flower Change Color Simply By Proximity?

We recently bought a pink geranium to replace a struggling red one and hung it in the same spot. The 2 plants have been less then six ft apart for a couple of months and the older red one seemed to come back from the dead and when it bloomed again, it was pink.?? ? There are two likely things that could have happened.

I suspect that seeds from a hybridization of the two have propagated. What you are seeing may be the dominant set of genes responsible for color.

Another possibility is a true mutation. This is quite common, but the color, here, leads me to believe that this is a result of seeds germinating.
