can a fig bush be trimmed back to within a foot of root ball

I have a fig plant that has grown tall with leaves on only the tips of the plant. . . 4 ft. I would like to cut it down and let it begin again. Is this a possible? How short should cuts be? Indoor plant.

It is usually better to prune back the main branches of fig trees by 1/3 to 1/4.
