Calla lilies

Question

My dwarf callas grew lush foliage this year but produced no flowers. I have 4 different groups of callas which all produced the most lush and healthy foliage they have ever had. However, they did not produce even one bloom, not even a bud. What could be the cause of this and what do I need to do to get them blooming next year? They have bloomed well in the past, although the leaves were much smaller than they were this year. They are planted in sunny, well drained soil in the ground, not in containers. I am puzzled because they plants looked very healthy, just flower free.

Thank you for sending us your gardening question. There are several reasons a calla lily may not bloom. However, if you have healthy, green foliage, it is probably not a watering issue. From your description, it sounds like your plants are getting enough sunlight. Therefore, you may wish to try a “bloom booster” fertilizer, one that has a high content of phosphorus and less nitrogen. If you want to use an organic fertilizer, you can use bone meal.
