do butter nut squash plants get flowers on them and are they edible?

Yes, anything that bears a fruit must come from a flower. Also, yes they are edible! Make sure to only eat male flowers if you intend to harvest squash from the plant. Leave a few to pollinate the fruiting female flowers.
