Q.Burning Bush Diseases

My husband did a bit of research on how to prune our burning bushes and decided this year to prune them all the way down to have a fresh start. He did this yesterday and found that one of them had black “rot” in middle of the trunk. Could you tell me what this is and how we can treat it? Thank you.

Was this particular burning bush sickly looking in any way, different than the others?

My best guess is that this may be crown rot. I am going to recommend you read the following article on this topic, which also prescribes a course of treatment:
