Brown Leaves on Gardenia Bushes

I have five gardenia bushes that I’ve had outdoors for at least three years. They have done well except for this year. Most of the leaves on all five bushes are brown. What does this mean? We had a fairly mild winter this year. It has certainly been colder other years and they have done fine.

It sounds like they may have suffered from some cold damage. If the stems are green, they will eventually recover and can regrow their leaves. You can prune any brown stems off.
