Boston fern

My husband repotted our fern. It started to have shoots all over the place. We couldn’t water it, as it was root bound and water ran off the plant. He decided to separate it and I now have a spindly fern that he wants to get a different pot for because he thinks the problem was the pot it was in. The pot is a pedestal pot and the fern looked beautiful in it. Any help please!!!!
