Bleeding dogwood

I have read that dogwoods generally do not “bleed” in the summer, but I just noticed that the dogwood in my yard is “bleeding” sap. What could be causing this? We did cut off a dead branch about a month ago and did not notice any “bleeding” at that time. It has been extremely hot here in Missouri for the past month. Thanks.
