Have bad sooty disease on stems and leaves of crepe myrtles, azaleas, and gardenias. Is this the same disease described in your article about rhododendrons?

Yes, it is. In addition to the rhododendron article on sooty mold, this article will also help: https://www.gardeningknowhow.com/plant-problems/disease/how-to-get-rid-of-sooty-mold.htm
