We have an apple and an apricot tree where some of the branches are getting black, and I would like to know what it is and what I can do about it. Thanks very much for any reply.

Is it soot-like in nature? If so, this is sooty mold fungus, usually brought about by insects, like aphids. You can treat the trees with neem oil, which will take care of whatever pest may be attacking the tree as well as the fungus.
