Best Way to Kill Zoysia Grass

Our neighbor planted zoysia grass in his yard and rather than spreading in his yard, it has invaded our yard. Several years ago we ‘killed’ it with Round-Up and then tilled the yard before replanting with bluegrass seed. It was fine for a few years and now it is back and even worse than last time. This grass in NOT popular in our state and I DO NOT want it in my yard.

Unfortunately, persistence is necessary with this grass. Zoysia is extremely difficult to get rid of. You can either mow it down as close as possible to the ground and treat with herbicide or remove the sod with a sod cutter. Small areas or patches of Zoysia in a lawn can be treated with a non-selective type herbicide, such as Round-up. For best results, apply the herbicide when the Zoysia grass is still green, actively growing and not dormant or under drought stress. Since Zoysia grass may regrow, more than one application will probably be needed.
