Best method to grow a plant from a tree cutting ?

I have tried to grow a bougainvillea plant from a tree cutting, but it doesn’t live long and perishes in ten days….What is the proper method to grow a plant from a cutting…..water/soil/pot….I am trying to grow in a big pot which has already a big plant…right/wrong…..?
