If a crêpe myrtle tree grows 20 to 30 feet, how far away from the house or should I plant it in order to get the best shade on the house?

I would go no less than 15 feet from your wall. 15 to 20 is probably the best and closest you can get, really. Otherwise, the roots could possibly mess with your wall or foundation. This article will offer more information on the care of the shrub:
