Barringtonia Acutangula Replanted

Question

Three weeks ago we had two Barringtonia acutangulas planted into a section in North Thailand. They are both 2-3 meters tall and were very leafy when replanted. Within a couple of days, the leaves started to fall and by about 10 days both trees were completely bare. We have been looking for any sign of new growth but have found nothing – in contrast to some websites informing that when the leaves wither and fall new leafage appears very quickly. Should we assume the trees are dead? We don’t want to wait too long (i. e. for the trees to be so dead that they fall over!) as the contractor has guaranteed replacement trees if these two die.
