Q.Barrel Cacti

Zone 94005 | mamaplant added on March 4, 2012 | Answered

We are redoing the backyard. There are several cacti that I would like to save and place in pots. What is the best way to do this without causing stress to the plants. Not sure about the root system or how to go about with the transplant.

First, make sure to wear gloves and protective clothing to avoid injury from its spines. Try to get up as much of the root system as possible and then transplant into the pots. You can shake off any extra dirt and simply mix in with cactus soil or sand. While it will need some initial watering following transplantation, remember, it is a succulent a will require little in the way of water once it establishes in its new location.
