Trees can shed bark for a number of reasons. It is normal to shed large chunks in some trees like silver maple, birch, and red buds. They are making room for new bark. Red maples are also on some of these lists and Autumn Flame is a red maple.

Other causes are environmental, disease, or animals. Squirrels will strip bark trying to get to the sweet, cambium layer beneath. It doesn't sound like sunscald because that shows up on the south side of trees. These articles should help:
