Banyan tree roots

My son has a beautiful Banyan tree at the foot of his driveway in Naples. There is a large root which has grown under his blacktop across the driveway making it uneven. I want to cut the blacktop out and then cut the root out and place gravel down to smooth it out. Will this damage the tree ? It will need to go in order to repair / replace the driveway.

I would not cut the root as this could do a bit of damage to the tree. If you do cut, then you may lose it, but there is a chance that it could recover. Just prepare to, potentially , lose the tree.
