Bamboo plant turning yellow

My 12 year old indoor bamboo plant is often turning yellow and finally losing lot of leaves from time to time. It has grown in water all these years. I change water completely from time to time and add water regularly. Once a week. Please advise what do I do wrong with the plant. I tried keeping it in direct sun as well as tried to keep in partial sun.
Please advise.
