Azealeas

Most of my old shrub is dead wood, there is new growth on one side, after they are finished blooming, can I prune the dead wood and hope for the best?

Yes, you can cut a few inches below where the wood first shows signs of being dead (in other words, prune slightly deeper than the dead wood). This article may help you:
