We recently purchased a house in Inverness – it has large, overgrown azalea bushes planted under two large live oak trees. Can I trim these bushes back now or should I wait until summer?

If you prune now, the azaleas won't produce any flowers next summer, but you won't damage the plant in the long run. The best time to prune is shortly after flowering, as explained in this article:
