Astilbe is on the deer resistant list. Remember, too, that deer will eat about any plant if it's hungry enough. Rabbits avoid plants with strong scents, prickles, spines, or leathery leaves. Coral bells are supposed to be rabbit resistant so they make work in your shade garden. I did find astilbe on a rabbit resistant list, too.
