Apricots Falling Off the Tree

I have an apricot tree that is about 7 years old and has had great yields for the past three years. This year I noticed spotting on the apricots and was advised to spray the tree with white oil as they were being eaten by worms – by that point the tree had many small apricots on it. During the past week, I have noticed many apricots falling off the tree – the smaller ones are falling off in quite large quantities. The larger ones seem okay. Why is the tree shedding so much fruit?? They are still about two months away from maturity.

Premature fruit drop is normally the result of poor pollination or an insect problem. In this case, insects. Here is an article that you may find helpful: https://www.gardeningknowhow.com/edible/fruits/apricots/apricot-tree-not-fruiting.htm [1]

Overbearing is another possibility. When the fruit is pea size, begin thinning to prevent fruit drop. This will reduce the energy of the tree so it can put more into the production of fruit. If pollination/fertilization is at too great a level for the tree to sustain, all of the set fruit will simply drop. You can also thin the blossoms rather than the fruit.
