The apples from our tree have brown areas throughout. What causes this and are they safe to use?

If the apples already had the brown spots when they were picked, there are a couple things this could be, including bitter pit, cork spot, or white rot. This site has more information on these diseases.

If the apples were stored and then developed these symptoms, it could be due to improper storage conditions.
