Ants Eating the Fruit of My Fig Trees

How can I prevent ants from eating the fruit of my fig trees? They attack just as the fruit is ripe. They enter through a hole at the base of the fig. It’s a race between me and them to eat the ripened fruit. I have tried filling the hole with wax, or have put baggies over each fig to keep the ants out. I have had some success with these methods. I was interested to know if you had any remedy to share.
