Q.Amaryllis & Rose Of Sharon Wintering Outside?

Zone 24018 | Anonymous added on October 31, 2021 | Answered

I’m in a new home, zone 7A about 300 feet above zone 7B a few blocks away, and don’t have garden space ready yet. I have 2 things I want to be sure overwinter, amaryllis & Rose of Sharon Last spring I separated several old amaryllis bulbs (descendants of one my Mom gave me years ago) that had not bloomed in several years and put them in pots outdoors. The foliage is very strong and I hope they’ll bloom again. My daughter potted some seedlings from her Rose of Sharon and they have lived on the deck all summer. They’re dropping their leaves now. Do I need to protect the pots from freezing? First hard freeze predicted next week, then back to the 70s outdoors. I’m debating bring them indoors (70 degrees, with sunny windows) or moving them to the carport, warmer than the unprotected deck, but not much sun. Your thoughts please.

I suggest putting them somewhere that stays above 40 degrees F for the winter. Since they are in pots, they are more vulnerable to the cold than if they were in the ground. These articles may help:
