Amaryllis (Hippeastrum)

Question

I have an Amaryllis bulb that my sister received from a friend at Christmas. It came in a box that had the pot and growing medium included. I planted as instructed Dec. 18. It took a very long time to produce any leaves. It currently has 2 leaves, one really tall one, and probably more coming. I’m concerned about the flower because I’ve read that the flowers come first. No sign of flowers yet. Also, the leaves keeping flopping over, like all the way over, and I’m afraid they’ll break. I have them propped against a window frame now. I looked up staking them, but all the info is on the flower stalk. Also, I looked up non-blooming amaryllis, and all the info is on re-blooming. This is a totally new bulb, never grown, since it was packaged. Am I the only one in the world with an amaryllis with no flowers and falling over leaves? Haha

It can happen, that you received a bulb that may not produce a flower. It could be due to lack of proper storage prior to your receiving the bulb.
You can wait it out and allow the leaves to die back naturally.
You could then store the bulb and try it again next year, but frankly if the bulb did not produce a flower, I may just toss this one out.

If it is still green and growing, by all means continue to let it grow.
If the leaves began yellowing, this means the bulb is signaling it’s life cycle is ending.
Watch and see, you never know!
