Am Digging Out A Fireplace To Convert To Flower Garden. Lots Of Ashes To Remove.

What can I do to make it compatible with grow flowers like roses. Seems to have been set to burn wood mostly and some charcoal.. we just moved ere and it is the only space I have available.
