aloe spikes

The spikes on my aloe plant have become long, dark green, curled (only the edges curl inward to the center of spike roll) and thin. Is this a growing phase or is there a problem to look for. The plant is 3 years old and in general good health. It has been in the same spot, in the windowsill, for this entire time and has been used and regrowth is good and strong.

Curling up leaves are an indication of not enough water.
