Albino sunflower seedling

While I’d like to thank you @BushDoctor for your diagnosis, I thought this was worthy of a repost. I had already put the rare albino sunflower under CFLs indoors lol. Will it still die… probably.

Unless it reverts and starts to create chlorophyll, then yes. Its fate is written in stone. If it does start to produce some green, then it will have a chance. In the unlikely event that it does survive, it will only tolerate the low light source for a few weeks, and stretch upwards in response. This will cause the young plant to die as well. If it does survive then I would recommend a higher light source closely matched to the light of the sun, both, in density and spectrum.

Either way… This is a neat little experiment. Such a strange thing to see an albino plant.

Variegated plants show partial albinism, and have trouble growing because of it sometimes. Fully albino plants couldn’t survive, as they lack what keeps them alive in the first place. Good luck on your experiment!

One more thing this experiment will give you a chance to see in action… This will show you how long those two little round leaves feed a seedling in nature. This is all that the plant is using to survive at this point. Those leaves do not collect sunlight, but are a nutrient reserve for until the plant makes its first leaves, that will then carry on photosynthesis. Very interesting to see.
