Agapanthus

My agapanthus is 4 years old and has out grown the flower bed. I have had up to 21 blooms at one time. I hate to disturb the entire plant when dividing it up. Would it be possible just to separate the overgrown outside portion of the plant? Possibly by just inserting a shovel in the area that I want to separate and dig up only that portion to replant?
