What is the best way to kill gnats in the soil of an african violet plant?

Keep the plants a bit drier, let them dry between waterings. The Gnat maggots will die.
Remove any dead leaves or plant material on the soil surface.
Place yellow sticky traps near the plants, the gnats are attracted to the yellow.
If necessary you can use a soil insecticide according to the package directions.
