Adding Topsoil Around Existing Shrubs

I would like to raise my yard where there is existing plants. Can I add several inches of topsoil around existing trees and shrubs without damage? How many inches can I raise it without damaging the existing plants, or is it not a good idea? What about existing Bahia grass? How much soil can I add over top of it, and will it grow back up to the surface?

Just add about 2-3 inches a few feet out from the plants. This will eventually work its way into the exisitng soil. You can add more as needed in problem areas once the topsoil begins to settle.
