Q.“A Hedge Instead Of A Picket Fence

I would like to replace (gradually) my long picket fence and keep growing existing imperfect hedge (mostly the English Elm). I would like to plant another type of hedge where the current one has dyed. the site is mostly sunny, and soil fairly ‘normal’. Do you have any recommendation, suggestion?. I live in Whitby, Ontario, growing zone 6. Thank you! Pavel
