Dogwood Tree

I have a 17 year old Dogwood Tree that simply fell over during a storm today. The ground did not come up and upon further inspection there did not appear to be much of a root system at all. We did have mulch around the tree and a stone wall border. It almost appears as if the tree could have rotted from in the ground. The odd thing is the ground around the tree was not disturbed at all. Any ideas on what could have caused this?

Dogwood Trees have a shallow and far reaching root system.
This is why they are difficult to transplant, it is very hard to dig up enough roots to sustain the tree.
Your tree may not be able to be saved at this point.
