Q.Surface/Ground Growth Around Forsythia Bushes

Anonymous added on April 25, 2011 | Answered

We pruned (radically) our very old forsythia bushes that hadn’t been tended to for years. Around the base of the bushes are many branches on the ground, now sprouting leaves, etc. What is this called and how do we get rid of, or tend these? Will they grow up and become more bushes?

Those are suckers. When you radically prune a shrub, they are common. You can dig them up and plant them elsewhere or let them grow and further fill out the current shrub.
