Q.Azeala Leaf & Plant Problem

Anonymous added on November 23, 2010 | Answered

(1) I live in Florence, NW Alabama. I have 14 Encore Azaleas, 11 are blooming very well, even in November. Three are stunted and their leaves are small, darker green in color mixed with a brown or purple tinge. They have produced a few flowers, but much smaller than the other bushes. Can you tell me what is the problem please?
(2) I understand that the best time to prune these plants is after the first flowering in the Spring. Is this information correct?

1) It sounds like it may possibly be root rot. Here it an article on the root rot: https://www.gardeningknowhow.com/ornamental/shrubs/azalea/phytophthora-root-rot-azaleas.htm Unfortunately, we would recommend pulling the affected plants out ASAP.

2) Yes, this is correct. This article will help you with that: https://www.gardeningknowhow.com/ornamental/shrubs/azalea/pruning-azaleas.htm
