Pruning a Pygmy Date Palm

Question

Can you remove half the stems on a 4 stemmed pygmy date palm without killing the entire plant?

I have a pigmy date palm that's 35 years old and 20ft tall...so pigmy is not accurate. I have never removed half of the branches, only the dead ones and have not had any problems.
