Q.50/50 Mixture For Leveling Out The Lawn, By Weight? Or By Volume?

Zone 29651 | Anonymous added on May 20, 2025 | Answered

I’ve read a few articles, one was on this site, that say to mix 50/50 top soil and sand for filling in low areas of the lawn. Is that 50/50 by weight or by volume? If I mix a cubic foot of top soil with 1 cubic foot of sand, the sand is going to be at least 2/3 of the weight of the mixture. So should I do that or should I weigh it out 1lb sand/ 1lb top soil?

It doesn't need to be exact. You can do it by volume. For example, fill a container with topsoil, then pour that into a larger container. Then fill the smaller container with sand and then add that to the larger container and mix by hand. Any way you combine them, the sand will be heavier.
